Create a coupon code
Use a coupon code when a customer should enter a code to receive a discount or access a promotion.
A coupon is different from a voucher. A coupon code changes the order price during checkout; a voucher carries a balance the customer bought or received and can redeem later.
Before you start
Decide:
- the discount code text customers will enter
- whether the discount is a percentage or a fixed amount, and its value
- whether the code is public, private, or support-only
Create the coupon
- In the back office, open Settings > Promotions.
- Select Create.
- Enter an Internal name so staff can recognize the promotion later.
- Enter the code customers must type in Discount code.
- Set the Value and choose the Unit: a percentage or a fixed amount off the order total.
- Select Create to save the promotion.
Test before sharing
- Open the public shop as a customer.
- Add an offer to the cart.
- On the cart page, open Have a voucher or discount code?, enter the code, and select Apply.
- Confirm the discount appears with the expected amount in the cart totals.
- Confirm the order records the discount code clearly enough for support and reporting.
Expected result
Customers can enter the discount code in the cart, see the expected discount on the order total, complete checkout, and leave a clear discount record on the order.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Code is rejected | Spelling, leading or trailing spaces, whether the promotion was archived, and whether the code was already applied to the cart. |
| Discount amount looks wrong | The promotion's Value and Unit (percent versus fixed amount), the order total the discount applies to, and whether another discount or voucher also applies. |
| Private registration is not protected enough | Unique codes, customer login, allowlists, direct links, and whether custom workflow support is required. |
| POS behavior differs from shop | POS sales channel, POS promotion support, receipt behavior, and imported order behavior. |
